I wrote years ago.
Its carefully crafted approximate separable kernel
provides high accuracy with as few as 8 samples per pixel, while other algorithms need at least 24 for comparable quality.
While most algorithms simply multiply the occlusion on top of the final image, giving a washed out look, SSSAO can integrate with Unity's lightning pipeline to provide accurate occlusion of ambient lighting.
